The fundamental processes in paper, film, and foil converting applications are built around web handling in a continuous process. There are some single drive machines such as slitters, but many of the process are sectionalized, multidrive machines.

These applications typically require speed regulation near 0%, drift between sections of 0%, repeatability of 100%, and the extreme of any other performance parameter named. Tension control is a common requirement. Raw material is usually in a roll so unwinding is needed. Final product is frequently shipped in a roll, so winding is also required. Electronic Lineshaft applications are common. This is an industry that offers many wonderful challenges to the drives and motion engineer.
