Sigma II Servo Tuning

Class Number: TRM020-SIGMA2TUNE
Class Location: HQ
Class Cost: $460

Class Topics:
The Sigma II Servo Tuning class is designed to give technicians and engineers an in-depth look into the tuning capability of the Sigma II Servo amplifier. In the classroom, students will learn tuning theory and application using desktop demos. In the lab, they will be presented with several working machines that must be tuned to specification. The students will complete the tuning of one machine with instructor assistance. The other three they will tune themselves, (a drive with interb=changeable coupling and inertia wheel, a belt slide, and a ball screw drive XY table). Class topics include but are not limited to:

  • Hands-on application of theory using the desktop demo. The student will be able to:
  • Implement tuning theory as it is presented.
  • Become proficient in graphical analysis using SigmaWin100
  • Use a tuning chart to streamline and organize the tuning process

  • Application of tuning theory to mechanical systems:
    1. Under-damped vs. Over-damped response
    2. Control loops and Gain
    3. Step Responses
    4. Servo System Control Loops
    5. Amplifier Control Modes
    6. Bandwidth
    7. Inertia ratio
    8. Tuning the Torque Loop (Torque Reference filter, Notch filter)
    9. Tuning the Speed Loop (Proportional Gain, Integral Time Constant, Mode Switch)
    10. Tuning the Position Loop (Proportional Gain, Feed Forward Gain)

Class Materials:
Students will receive a copy of the class training manual as well as selected product user and technical manuals

Prerequisites:
Each student must have completed the class entitled "Sigma II Applications". Because this is a technical class, a technical degree and/or several years of motion control experience is recommended. If you are not sure if this class is right for you, call and speak with one of Yaskawa's training engineers.

Class Format:
This class runs from 8:30 am to 5:00 pm, with a one-hour lunch and two 15-minute breaks. The class consists of approximately 25% lecture and 75% hands-on exercises.

Due to the equipment required, this class is not available on-site.

Testimonials of Recent Students

"The Sigma II Tuning Class is the most comprehensive course on servo system tuning I have ever attended. The class has a clear straight forward progression. It does an excellent job of defining the various tuning parameters, showing you how to use them, and explaining their relationships to each other. It does this by giving understandable and to the point lectures and then reinforcing the lectures with hands on application labs. I would recommend this course to anyone (seasoned pros as well first timers) that has to work on servo systems in the field."

"Tuning Class...Good class! A great opportunity to refine tuning skills under conditions where a customer is not looking over your shoulder and are reluctant to experiment with extremes for fear of damaging their equipment. Also appreciated the opportunity to use some of the active functions (i.e. harmonic analysis and inertia determination). Repetitive practice with the mechanics of operating SigmaWin certainly helps speed your performance.
Time for some sales calls...... make that.... Sales!"
