MP940 Machine Controller

Single-axis; 115, 240, 480 Volts

The MP940 Machine Controller is a legacy product and no longer promoted in the Americas. (The retrofit/upgrade to the MP940 is the MP2000iec product family, specifically the MP2600iec is a machine controller module fully integrated in to Yaskawa's latest Sigma-5 Series Amplifier. The MP940 Machine Controller series was a single-axis controller and a member of Yaskawa's MotionSuite family of electronic machine controllers. The modular packaging of the MP940 provides integral mounting with Sigma II drives from 30 watt to 55kW, with voltages of 115, 240 and 480 volts.

	Is the MP-940 capable of operating Yaskawa linear motors? Posted Date: 01/14/2005 Answer: Yes, it is possible when using MotionWorks. The only difference between using a rotary motor and a linear motor with the MP-940 is to select Linear Type vs Rotary Type in the SVA section of Module Configuration. By doing this, the additional parameters for Linear Motors are displayed in the "ServoPack" tab. There are three, however, that will require immediate attention to allow motion to occur. Please reference the users manuals for information regarding all other parameters. SGDH Parameter Settings: 1) Pn280: Linear Scale Pitch (micrometers), the ServoPack will remain in an alarm state until this is set. 2) Pn483: Forward Force Limit (% of rated), factory default is 30% (for safety), set appropriately for application. 2) Pn484: Reverse Force Limit (% of rated), factory default is 30% (for safety), set appropriately for application. 	Is it possible to transfer cam data from Mircosoft Excel to an MP controller? Posted Date: 10/26/2005 Answer: Yes. The following steps describe the process. 1) Save the file as .CSV 2) Open Yaskawa's 'Cam Tool' software, select 'Import' under the 'File' menu and open the CSV file. 3) Enter the 'Max Phase Value' (master cycle) and 'Max Position Value' (slave cycle) suitable for the data, and select OK for 'Set Style' and 'Set Parameter' windows. 4) Save file as .CDD. 5) Log online to the MP controller with MotionWorks Software. 6) Select 'File Transfer' under 'File' menu in 'Cam Tool' software. 7) Choose the CDD file for source, Double-Length for data type, and first register address, then select OK. Attached is an example documenting the transfer of a cam table created in Excel. When creating the cam table in Excel, the following rules should be taken into account: a. The master data must start at 0. b. There must not be repeated master entries. Ex: 1, 2, 3, 3, 4,etc. c. The master points must be in increasing sequence. Ex: 1, 2, 3, 2, 5,etc. d. Gaps in between data points are allowed. Ex: 1, 2, 4, 5, 8,etc. The CSV file will fail to import if these guidelines are not kept. 	Is it possible to set up ASCII text fields in an HMI Recipe to specify recipe name so it can be modified and stored in an MP9 Controller? Posted Date: 11/08/2001 Answer: Yes. Recipe names can be programmed in the HMI and stored/changed during runtime along with the rest of the recipe data (the recipe names are stored in register blocks inside the MP products). When the HMI product is connected to an MP9 series product, the "Yaskawa MP/CP" driver will be selected. This driver supports both Numeric (M or I registers) and ASCII (text) data formats. To create a text-based recipe name, first select Recipe Data for Data Field Source. Next, click on the Designer development screen to place the Recipe Data item on the panel (will look like "RRRRRR"). From the field definition screen, select "ASCII" from the Display Format dropdown. Next, set the Address Offset to a known unused register number. MW registers will be used here (or select from a TAG list). Next set the Field Width to the maximum number of characters for the text based recipe name. At this point, it is important to note that each character defined takes up a total of 8 bits, and MW registers in the MP9** controllers are 16 bits wide. Because of this, it will be necessary to use caution when specifying the Address Offset, and insure that there are enough registers unused to support the entire Field Width. For Example - Suppose Field Width is set to 10 (to support a recipe name of up to 10 characters long), and Address Offset is set to an arbitrary number of 10. This means that 10/2=5 MW registers will need to be reserved starting at MW00010 (MW00010, MW00011, MW00012, MW00013, MW00014). If the Controller or HMI use these registers for anything else, the data will be overwritten and the data will appear garbled on the screen. After this is done, it is now possible to set up the recipe name row from the "Recipe Configuration" Screen. Do this by highlighting the row, and clicking on the "Set As Recipe Name" button. The row will show a * next to the register or tag name. Next it will be necessary to add the "upload", "Download", and recipe control variable to the screen. After downloading and running, it will now be possible to cycle through the recipes and view the different recipe names loaded. If Read/Write was selected on the Recipe Data source, then it will be possible to modify the name. The attached file is an example Designer Application Project for an eTOP11 communicating to an MP940 (Etop11~2.zip). It shows a simple recipe configuration with text recipe names on page 3 and 4. Both are tied together in a Recipe Menu shown on page 5. To allow the user to edit the text recipe names during runtime, it will be necessary to prepare an ASCII or alpha numeric text entry screen. 	Is it possible to route the POT and NOT signals through DeviceNet on an MP940D? Posted Date: 09/05/2001 Answer: Technically Yes, but care must be taken to insure safety. Positive Over Travel (POT) and Negative Over Travel (NOT) are considered critical I/O, and their function is controlled within the SGDH amplifier by default. This strict control insures that motion will stop given an OT situation. Caution should be used when trying to control such an event over a network, particularly if the network is disconnected (in this case, the controller must immediately stop motion if network heartbeat is lost). These inputs which are wired into the SGDH, are then mapped into the MP940 controller (every 125microsec) to be used for further decision making in the MotionWorks or MotionWorks+ program. All 7 isolated inputs into the SGDH 1CN connector can be read from IWC025 bits 0,1,2,3,4,5, and 6 (or "Sigma_*" inputs from MW+). To view any of these through DeviceNet, simply map the inputs to a DeviceNet output, then each DeviceNet scan will have updated info for other nodes (this is Polled I/O). 	In the MP940 controller, how are the FLASH and COPY switches used? Posted Date: 05/21/2001 Answer: When an MP940 program is executed, it runs from RAM memory, and variables (or registers) reside in RAM. Without a battery, this memory will naturally decay and lose information over time, so Yaskawa recommends that a battery is attached to the MP940 to maintain the data in RAM. An alternate method of preserving the program data and register data is to store it in the built-in flash memory of the amplifier. The entire contents of RAM can be saved to Flash using either MotionWorks or MotionWorks+. To retrieve the data from Flash, simply set the dip switches on the front of the MP940 unit. Operation note: Upon application of control power with ONLY the "RUN" switch on, the controller will use the program and registers that are currently resident in RAM. WIthout a battery, the RAM memory is subject to loss, and could result in an A.E0 or A.9F alarm. With the "Flash" switch on during power up, the program will be copied from Flash to RAM for runtime. With the "Copy" switch on, the variable (register) data will be copied from Flash to RAM for runtime. Flash: The "flash" switch copies the ladder programs from Flash to RAM on power-up. The data registers, however, are not copied. Copy: The "copy" switch copies the global variables ('M' registers) from Flash to RAM. The values of these switches are checked during power-up, therefore power must be cycled after turning the switches ON. If the MP940 does not have a battery, both switches should be left on all the time. If variables (registers) are changed on a constant basis (such as from an HMI), and need to be retained, then a battery will be necessary.
