What is the memory capacity for the MP2000 IEC Controllers? Posted Date: 01/05/2011 Answer: The capacity of the controller is 8 MB of flash memory and 32 MB of RAM. The controller will come from the factory with some of that memory used for the operating system and firmware. The figure attached to this document (.JPG) is from the Hardware Configuration software describes the memory allocation of the controller in an out of the box scenario. It's important to note that the controller pre-allocates all the IEC memory that will never be allocated to an application program, so the pie chart will show about 1/3 used regardless of how many axes or how many variables are created. The remainder of the memory is available for either data files, such as cam files, or data logging files. Posted Date: 07/13/2004 Answer: The Cam Tool software allows a maximum size of 4096 calculated data points for any given cam table. However, there are a total of 32768 16-bit words available in the 'C' registers and 'M' registers of the MP900 series controllers. Cam data are typically stored as long integer numbers (which are 32-bit words). Therefore it takes 2 words for each master or slave position. It takes 4 words to make a single master-slave pair (a single point on the cam table). Dividing 32768 by 4 yields 8191 position pairs that can be stored in a single cam table. (Because 2 words are used as the table header that defines the number of cam points in the table.) If an application requires multiple cam tables that would exceed the memory available, the cam table can be calculated from within the application program or downloaded from an HMI or PC. What is the life expectancy of a Sigma-5 motor when operating above 40 degrees Celsius (104 F)? Posted Date: 10/18/2010 Answer: The Sigma-5 motor's class F insulation system is rated at 155 degrees Celsius (311 F) maximum internal operating temperature. Every 10 degree C increase of actual temperature above this maximum specification will decrease the life of the insulation system by 50%. The internal temperature of a motor producing rated torque, operating at or below an ambient temperature of 40 degrees Celsius, and mounted to the recommended heat sink should not normally exceed this 155 degrees Celsius limit. Within the rated operating conditions, Yaskawa America Inc. recommends that the bearings be serviced every 20,000 hours. If the ambient temperature exceeds 40 degrees Celsius, the usable life of the bearings and the motor can be decreased but there is no other information available on the bearing life degradation in elevated temperature conditions. The recommended service schedule can be found in the Safety Precaution pamphlet manual that is shipped with every motor ( Manual No. C230200 00B). Posted Date: 06/24/2013 Answer: The latest driver is Galil/Yaskawa 3.09 / 5.04 (see attached UPLC82.DLL). This driver was created August 8, 2002 and allows the programmer to select hardware handshaking ("Use RTS/CTS") from the controller setup screen. This is shown in the first screen capture of Designer Software below. This check box allows compatibility with previous versions of programs (previous version drivers do not use hardware handshaking - See FAQ # MNEN-5CJMH8). Hardware handshaking will enhance communication robustness. This new driver also implements a different method of obtaining controller variable values that the previous driver, further enhancing the relaibility of the system. NOTE: To use hardware handshaking, a new communication cable will need to be wired. New Driver Installation Instructions: Note: When changing to a new driver, the filename will be the same, but the verison number changes. 1) From the C:\Designer directory, make a back-up of the existing UPLC82.DLL driver. 2) Copy the new driver file attached below to that directory to replace the old driver 3) Launch Designer programming software 4) From the Project/Change Controller Driver menu, click on the "Find All" button. What is the difference between Z registers and A registers when used in Function Blocks? Posted Date: 04/30/2002 Answer: Z and A registers are both working registers that are used inside function blocks Z registers are Global Internal Function Block registers consisting of 64 words of shared memory space within the CPU (Internal refers to internal to the function block). These registers can be represented in bit, 16-bit word, long word, and floating point, and are working registers available for use specifically within function blocks. Since they are global, several function blocks have access and can modify the stored value. A registers are Local External Function Block registers (External refers to registers used inside the function block, but register space that is reserved outside of the function block). When a function block is defined, a block of memory is reserved by defining the starting address and the data size. This block of memory can be defined as General Global register space (M registers) or Local Drawing register space (D registers). Example: If a function block is defined at address DA00010, and to utilize 10 registers, then registers DW00010 thru DW00019 should be reserved by the programmer for the use of that specific function block. In this case, AW00000 would be mapped directly to DW00010 each scan. When the function block is being used in a drawing, to monitor an internal working register such as AW00000 in this example one would monitor DW00010. - If D registers are used, then A registers are limited to the D register limit for local drawings - quantity of 16383 per drawing. D registers consume programming memory and expand according to need (limited to programming memory available and number of drawings). - If M registers are used, then A registers are limited to the M register limit globally for the controller - quantity of 32767. The Sigma II I/O (CN1 connector) is mostly dedicated I/O with some user defined I/O. The MP940 (I/O connector) is all user defined. What is the difference between the "I" and "J" extended I/O options for the SMC-2000? Posted Date: 07/13/2004 Answer: With the SMC-2000, both the "I" and the "J" options are extended I/O options that add 40 inputs and 42 outputs to the controller. The difference between the two options is the electrical specifications of the outputs. The "I" option uses "dry contact" outputs. These outputs are capable of switching any voltage up to 200VDC (max 0.5A, 10W). Each group of seven outputs has its own common reference, so multiple voltages can be used. The "J" option uses solid-state output. The outputs are all 24VDC (100mA per point), but because they are solid state, there are no mechanical parts to arc and/or wear out. If a system uses mostly 24VDC outputs (this is very common), Yaskawa recommends the "J" option for it's longer life. If there is only one or two outputs that are higher voltage or AC voltage, it is best to use relays to control these outputs. Both the "I" and "J" options use two 50-pin high-density connectors for wiring. What is the difference between STN and TFT on an LCD HMI? Posted Date: 07/13/2004 Answer: LCD: Abbreviation of liquid crystal display, a type of display used in digital watches, many portable computers, and industrial HMI products. All of the EXOR HMI Products have LCD screens. LCD displays utilize two sheets of polarizing material with a liquid crystal solution between them. An electric current passed through the liquid causes the crystals to align so that light cannot pass through them. Each crystal, therefore, is like a shutter, either allowing light to pass through or blocking the light. Monochrome LCD images usually appear as blue or dark gray images on top of a grayish-white background. Color LCD displays use two basic techniques for producing color: Passive matrix is the less expensive of the two technologies. The other technology, called thin film transistor (TFT) or active-matrix, produces color images that are as sharp as traditional CRT displays, but the technology is expensive. Recent passive-matrix displays using new CSTN and DSTN technologies produce sharp colors rivaling active-matrix displays. Most LCD screens used in notebook computers are backlit to make them easier to read. STN: A technique for improving LCD display screens by twisting light rays. Supertwist displays are also known as supertwist nematic (STN) displays. The difference between the two protocols lies in the way the data is organized in the registers. 16-bit words are handled the same in both protocols, but addressing individual bits in a 16-bit word is accomplished differently. 32-bit long integer and floating point numbers are also handled differently by the two protocols. The YS-15 cable, also known as a Programming Cable, is currently used to connect between a PC and the MP940 via RS232 (port#1 on the MP940). The YS-15 cable supports all revisions of the MP940 product. The YS-13 cable is an older style cable which was used on MP940 versions A03 and lower (it is not possible to communicate to an MP940 versions A05 or greater using a YS-13 cable). Firmware Versions A03 (of the MP940) and lower only supported two wirre RS422/485. Firmware versions A05 and above now support both two and four wire. Hence, CTS and RTS are lines now supported in the MP940. The YS-15 cable loops back these lines to allow communications when the PC does not use the CTS/RTS lines. The 30VDC rating applies to inductive loads such as relays and contactors. If these outputs are being used by the customer for Non-Inductive loads, then the 1Amp rating is still fine at 48VDC. Posted Date: 10/06/2011 Answer: The RETURN causes the controller to stop executing code in a function or function block POU, and immediately go back to the POU that called the function. This is good for execution efficiency, but can cause problems if not used correctly. It's efficient because the code below the RETURN becomes dormant. (Not scanned) Never allow the RETURN to execute if any code below the RETURN is still "Active." Active means an Execute input for a function block is high, or a function inside the function is "Busy," or an R_TRIG has a high input, basically any code that will become confused after "sleeping." For example, if a RETURN takes place while an MC_Move_Absolute.Execute is high, MC_MoveAbsolute will not notice when the execute logic goes low. Next time the function is executed, MC_MoveAbsolute will not notice the rising edge for execute, because to the MC_MoveAbsolute, it has always been high. For examples, look at the code used in nearly all of Yaskawa's Toolbox functions. We use a technique that only allows the RETURN to take place if many conditions are met. The higher the ambient temperature the lower is the maximum output current because the heat dissipation becomes more difficult.
