	Can the PID in the V7 Drive be used for positioning? Posted Date: 10/09/2014 Answer: No. The output of the PID regulator in the V7 Drive is a unidirectional frequency (speed) command. Bidirectional speed control is necessary to do positioning. The drive must be able to approach the target by using bi-directional speed control. A separate position loop controller may be used to provide the V7 with a bi-polar speed reference/error signal that can allow the V7 to zero in on position. Basically an outer-position loop is needed to control the speed of the V7 for position loop control. Note: Earlier versions of the V7 Drive were named GPD 315/V7, GPD 315 or VS Mini V7. A serial connection can be established, and the NS600 can be operated using serial commands. To setup communication: 1. Connect a YS-12 cable from a comm port on the PC to CN6 on the NS600. 2. 	Can the MP920 change the parameters in an SGDH amplifier? Posted Date: 08/19/2004 Answer: Yes, an MP920 with an SVB Module can read/write SGDH parameters via the register OLxx35. Depending on the motion command code, the OLxx35 register can hold three different types of data: 1. When Motion Command Code (OWxx20) is set to 17 (read servo parameter) or 18 (change servo parameter), OLxx35 contains the servo drive parameter number. Bits 0-11 are the Pn number and bits 12-15 are the number of words. When reading, the value of the servo parameter is stored in Pn Constant Read Data register ILxx28. When writing, the value stored in Pn Constant Change Data register, OWxx36, is written to the amplifier. 2. When Motion Command Code (OWxx20) is set to 19, OLxx35 contains the current servo drive alarm monitor number. The Alarm code is found in the Servo Drive Alarm Code Register, IWxx24. 3. When Motion Command Code (OWxx20) is set to 20, OLxx35 contains the current servo drive alarm history monitor number. When specifying a number between 0-9, the alarm code corresponding to the specified monitor number is stored in the Servo Drive Alarm Code Register, IWxx24. Example for reading Torque Reference Filter Time Constant, Pn401: 1. Set OWxx35 to H1401. The first three nibbles have the parameter number 401 and the last nibble specifies the number of words, in this case 1 (0~65535) 2. Change OWxx20 to 17. 	Can the MP2300 control a servo's position with a torque mode amplifier over MechatroLink? Posted Date: 07/25/2005 Answer: The MP2300 uses either the MechatrolLink network or an SVA module for servo control. The SVA module is designed to work with amplifiers in Speed mode. Although in some cases a torque amplifer may be used, the control algorithm has been optimized to output an analog speed command and close only the position loop with the feedback it receives. Performance will be greatly diminished if the velocity loop is not closed at the amplifier. With the earlier MP920 or MP930 over MechatrolLink I (NS100) the servo can only be used in position mode. When using the MP2300 over MechatrolLink II (NS115), new command codes are available to place the servo in position, speed, torque or phase control mode. However, only position and phase modes transfer a position value to the drive. When used in torque mode, the programmer can only specify a torque reference value and a speed limit. No position information is sent. No position loop is closed in the controller. This mode is ideal for web tension control. MechatrolLink II can command Torque Reference Mode using either 17 or 32 byte mode transfers. However, the Torque Reference can only be monitored in 32 byte mode. 	Can the motor brake output (/BK) on an EtherCAT SERVOPACK be controlled by the EtherCAT Master? Posted Date: 11/03/2017 Answer: Yes. The EtherCAT Master can control all the physical outputs on the SERVOPACK. However, the SERVOPACK masks output SO1 by default. SO1 is the default output for motor brake (/BK). In order to control the motor brake output on the EtherCAT SERVOPACK (if using the default parameter for brake assignment Pn50F.2 = 1), the Digital Output Bit Mask (60FE:02) needs to be set to allow writing to that output. Example: Set 60FE:02 from old value 0x000C0000, to new value 0x000E0000. After doing that, you will be able to control the brake output with 60FE:01. If the SERVOPACK status output functions in Pn50E, Pn50F, and Pn510 are assigned, the status will be output using the set value of this function as well as OR logic from the EtherCAT Master value of 60FE:01. 	Can the linear encoder be mounted "backwards" (positive direction of linear encoder opposite to positive direction of linear motor)? Posted Date: 04/28/2003 Answer: Yes, the linear encoder can be mounted "backwards" relative to the linear motor, it is good design practice to insure that the motor and encoder have the same positive direction reference. Normally, the linear motor and encoder would be oriented such that the positive direction of each is in the same direction. The positive direction of the linear motor is in the direction in which the motor cables/connectors protrude. Generally, this holds true for the linear encoder as well (as it does for Renishaw and Heidenhain). Please consult the linear encoder manufacturer in regards to positive orientation. If the linear encoder is mounted "backwards" relative to the linear motor, one of the following MUST be done in order for the linear motor system to function properly. 1. Rewire the linear encoder cable. Swap the "A" signal wires with the corresponding "B" signal wires. 2. The following is only applicable for Sigma II SGDH type servo amplifiers with the Y213 modification (Y213 modification is for use with linear motors only). Set user parameter Pn080.1=1 (B-phase progression). This will allow for proper commutation of the linear motor. However, the positive direction of the motor will now be in the direction opposite in which the motor cables/connectors protrude. To change the motor direction, set Pn000.0=1. 3. The following is only applicable for Legend SGDG type servo amplifiers. Set SW1 function selection switch no.4 (Linear Scale Polarity Reversal) to OFF (B-phase progression). This will allow for proper commutation of the linear motor. However, the positive direction of the motor will now be in the direction opposite in which the motor cables/connectors protrude. 	Can the JP and JS commands do more than jump to a specified label? Posted Date: 07/13/2004 Answer: The JP command allows the user to jump to a specific label. There is an undocumented feature of the SMC controllers that allows the program to jump a certain number of lines past the label. The format is JP + . For instance, JP #CASE+4 will jump four lines past the label #CASE. Here is an example program that uses this function to duplicate a CASE statement: IN "Input the number of axes to use", NumAxes JP #CASE+NumAxes //Jump to appropriate case #CASE SHX; JP#DONE //Turn on X axis servo (#CASE+1) SHXY; JP#DONE //Turn on X & Y axis servos (#CASE+2) SHXYZ; JP#DONE //Turn on X, Y, and Z axis servos (#CASE+3) SHXYZW //Turn on X, Y, Z, and W axis servos (#CASE+4) #DONE This simple program segment uses the variable NumAxes, which is input by the user. It then jumps to the appropriate case by jumping past the #CASE label and turning on the servos needed. After the specified case is executed, it jumps to the #DONE label to bypass the other cases. This command technique can help reduce labels in certain circumstances. The SMC-2000 can only have 256 labels and the SMC3010 can have 126, so in very long programs this technique might be necessary. IMPORTANT: When using this technique, adding a line could produce bad results! For example, adding a line after the #CASE statement above will make all of the case statements go to the wrong line to execute! It is recommended that if you use this command, you should document it well in the code. Also, since "double-slash" comment lines (beginning with //) are not downloaded to the SMC-2000, ignore them when counting lines. 	Can the E7 keypad display cooling fan operating hours? (for maintenance purposes) Posted Date: 06/08/2007 Answer: Yes, the E7 displays three monitors on digital operator at power up. The top most display line is the "Power On" or "Active" monitor. This monitor is Factory Defaulted to U1-01 (Speed Command), as shown in the attached. The Active Monitor, on the E7 drive, is capable of displaying one of 23 different selectable User Monitors . One of these selections, is (Heatsink Cooling Fan Operation Time) monitor number U1-40. This procedure can be used to display any of the 23 different E7 monitors. Simply make the desired monitor selection in parameter O1-01. Make the following E7 settings to display U1-40 as the Active Monitor: Set parameter O1-02 = "4" (User Monitor selection) Set parameter O1-01 = "40" (Heatsink Cooling Fan Operation Time monitor U1-40) After making these adjustments, Cycling the main power supply to the E7 causes U1-40 to appear on the digital operator. In addition to viewing and using these bits individually, they can also be utilized using the I/O variable "Local_Input_Bank" for MotionWorks+ and the input word (IW00000 by default) for MotionWorks. This variable returns an integer value that corresponds to the bits that have been turned on. For instance, if bits 1, 3, 5, and 7 are on and all others off, then the register that holds these values is 10101010 in binary, which is 170 in decimal. Therefore, Local_Input_Bank=170 in that case. Armed with this knowledge, special "tricks" can be used to isolate a smaller group of inputs for our use. To do this, the "Bitwise AND" comparator is used. The Bitwise AND comparison (MW+ uses '&' for this) converts integers to their binary equivalent and compares each bit individually. This requires using a mask to choose which bits to look at and which to ignore. For instance, if the program requires the use of bits 3, 4, and 5 to choose one of eight index lengths, take the Local_Input_Bank variable and bitwise AND it with the mask 00111000 (bits 3-5 on, all others off). The result for bits 3, 4, and 5 will be whatever the input is for that bit, and the other bits will all be zero (anything ANDed with zero results in zero).
