Webcast: Redundant VFD Solutions - 10/2/23

Sep 25, 2023

Webcast: Monday, October 2, 2023 10:00 AM CDT

Variable Frequency Drives (VFDs) role in pursuing energy efficiency in commercial buildings achieved new heights in 2019 when the global installation of VFDs in HVAC applications eclipsed a per annum run rate of $3B. Since entering the scene 30 years ago, mechanical equipment’s reliance on modulating motor speed with VFDs has left an indelible mark in pursuing green buildings.

In North America, the “bypass” VFD is a ubiquitous solution variant. The bypass circuit was insurance against VFD faults and failures in the early days. Fast forward to today, and field specifications rely on the bypass solution as a de facto measure. If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.

The reality is some applications are more critical than others. This webcast will explore when it makes sense to consider specifying a redundant VFD solution. Like a bypass solution, there is a backup, however, instead of running at 60 HZ (full speed), a redundant VFD solution permits the application to operate and modulate the speed as intended. Given the range of risks associated with mission-critical applications, this can be an economical choice.

Learning objectives:

  • When to consider a redundant VFD
  • Why a VFD needs backup
  • Mechanical design’s role in redundancy
  • Redundancy vs. resiliency
