Posted Date: 11/05/2013 Answer: Both MECHATROLINK-II and MECHATROLINK-III provide robust, synchronized communication to allow exceptional real-time, distributed motion control. Unlike many networks, both MECHATROLINK-II and MECHATROLINK-III allow for a portion of the cyclic bandwidth to be allocated for in-cycle retries. Should a packet become corrupted by noise, the hardware automatically resends the packet within the same cycle. This unique feature greatly increases noise rejection, making MECHATROLINK-II and MECHATROLINK-III ideal for factory conditions. Additionally, the MECHATROLINK-II and MECHATROLINK-III protocols provide detection of lost packets so both master and slave nodes can raise alarms. Both MECHATROLINK-II and MECHATROLINK-III are open networks with a wide variety of devices from many vendors. Both simplify interoperability by defining standard packet formats, device discovery protocols, and device profiles. What are the differences between MECHATROLINK-II and MECHATROLINK-III? Posted Date: 11/05/2013 Answer: There are many differences including speed, slave count, and behavior. These differences arise because the physical layer differs and are summarized in the table attached to this document (.PDF file). These differences mean that while MECHATROLINK-III performs better, the motion programmer must be more thoughtful in choosing a network topology and configuring the network. With MECHATROLINK-III, the time it takes for a master to send a packet to a slave and receive the slave's reply is called the response time, and it depends on the number of intermediate slave nodes, the packet size and the sum of the cable lengths. The sum of the response times for each slave and the number of retries configured determines the minimum communication cycle. Consequently, for the same number of nodes, a star topology will have a lower minimum communication cycle than a line topology. The network configuration for MECHATROLINK-III contains the expected response times for each slave node, the number of retries and the communication cycle. As a result, the network configuration depends on how the slave nodes are physically connected. Changing the physical connection without updating the configuration may cause the controller to be unable to communicate with a slave node. The motion programmer can increase the expected response times to allow the system to work with different topologies, but doing so may result in a slower communication cycle.
