Is it possible to transfer cam data from Mircosoft Excel to an MP controller?

Answer:

Yes. The following steps describe the process.
1) Save the file as *.CSV
2) Open Yaskawa's 'Cam Tool' software, select 'Import' under the 'File' menu and open the CSV file.
3) Enter the 'Max Phase Value' (master cycle) and 'Max Position Value' (slave cycle) suitable for the data, and select OK for 'Set Style' and 'Set Parameter' windows.
4) Save file as *.CDD.
5) Log online to the MP controller with MotionWorks Software.
6) Select 'File Transfer' under 'File' menu in 'Cam Tool' software.
7) Choose the CDD file for source, Double-Length for data type, and first register address, then select OK.

Attached is an example documenting the transfer of a cam table created in Excel.

When creating the cam table in Excel, the following rules should be taken into account:
a. The master data must start at 0.
b. There must not be repeated master entries. Ex: 1, 2, 3, 3, 4,etc.
c. The master points must be in increasing sequence. Ex: 1, 2, 3, 2, 5,etc.
d. Gaps in between data points are allowed. Ex: 1, 2, 4, 5, 8,etc.

The CSV file will fail to import if these guidelines are not kept.

Another way to transfer a CSV file to an MP controller is possible using CSVTool, a VB applet.

Yes. A speed control feature is integrated into Sigma II amplifiers. This mode of operation is called Contact Input Speed Control. It allows the user to initially set three different motor speeds with parameters, then select one of the speeds externally using a contact input.

Is it possible to set up ASCII text fields in an HMI Recipe to specify recipe name so it can be modified and stored in an MP9** Controller?

Answer:

Yes. Recipe names can be programmed in the HMI and stored/changed during runtime along with the rest of the recipe data (the recipe names are stored in register blocks inside the MP products). When the HMI product is connected to an MP9** series product, the "Yaskawa MP/CP" driver will be selected. This driver supports both Numeric (M or I registers) and ASCII (text) data formats.

To create a text-based recipe name, first select Recipe Data for Data Field Source. Next, click on the Designer development screen to place the Recipe Data item on the panel (will look like "RRRRRR"). From the field definition screen, select "ASCII" from the Display Format dropdown. Next, set the Address Offset to a known unused register number. MW registers will be used here (or select from a TAG list). Next set the Field Width to the maximum number of characters for the text based recipe name. At this point, it is important to note that each character defined takes up a total of 8 bits, and MW registers in the MP9** controllers are 16 bits wide. Because of this, it will be necessary to use caution when specifying the Address Offset, and insure that there are enough registers unused to support the entire Field Width.

For Example - Suppose Field Width is set to 10 (to support a recipe name of up to 10 characters long), and Address Offset is set to an arbitrary number of 10. This means that 10/2=5 MW registers will need to be reserved starting at MW00010 (MW00010, MW00011, MW00012, MW00013, MW00014). If the Controller or HMI use these registers for anything else, the data will be overwritten and the data will appear garbled on the screen.

After this is done, it is now possible to set up the recipe name row from the "Recipe Configuration" Screen. Do this by highlighting the row, and clicking on the "Set As Recipe Name" button. The row will show a * next to the register or tag name. Next it will be necessary to add the "upload", "Download", and recipe control variable to the screen. After downloading and running, it will now be possible to cycle through the recipes and view the different recipe names loaded. If Read/Write was selected on the Recipe Data source, then it will be possible to modify the name.

The attached file is an example Designer Application Project for an eTOP11 communicating to an MP940 (Etop11~2.zip). It shows a simple recipe configuration with text recipe names on page 3 and 4. Both are tied together in a Recipe Menu shown on page 5.

To allow the user to edit the text recipe names during runtime, it will be necessary to prepare an ASCII or alpha numeric text entry screen. An example of this is shown below using the UniKey keypad development tool (found on the Uni-Win installation disk). See alphakey.kbd for an example.

Is it possible to run MotionWorks IEC via Remote Desktop?

Answer:

Yes, however, the software cannot be launched remotely due to licensing restrictions. This limitation can be overcome by following one of the methods described below.

1) Use other remote control software, such as RealVNC. http://www.realvnc.com/

2) Have someone local to the PC with MotionWorks IEC start the software. MotionWorks IEC cannot be launched via Remote Desktop, but it can be operated remotely once it is running. For MotionWorks IEC 2.x, the license is checked the first time a project is opened. If MotionWorks IEC 2.x is configured to open the last project, the software will operate normally. If the software was not configured to open the last project, or this is the first time MotionWorks IEC 2.x is executed, the local user must start a new project first.

3) Configure the PC to automatically start MotionWorks IEC upon boot up.
a. Windows XP configuration for adding MotionWorks IEC to Startup
b. Windows 7 configuration for adding MotionWorks IEC to Startup

Is it possible to route the POT and NOT signals through DeviceNet on an MP940D?

Answer:

Technically Yes, but care must be taken to insure safety.

Positive Over Travel (POT) and Negative Over Travel (NOT) are considered critical I/O, and their function is controlled within the SGDH amplifier by default. This strict control insures that motion will stop given an OT situation. Caution should be used when trying to control such an event over a network, particularly if the network is disconnected (in this case, the controller must immediately stop motion if network heartbeat is lost).

These inputs which are wired into the SGDH, are then mapped into the MP940 controller (every 125microsec) to be used for further decision making in the MotionWorks or MotionWorks+ program. All 7 isolated inputs into the SGDH 1CN connector can be read from IWC025 bits 0,1,2,3,4,5, and 6 (or "Sigma_*" inputs from MW+). To view any of these through DeviceNet, simply map the inputs to a DeviceNet output, then each DeviceNet scan will have updated info for other nodes (this is Polled I/O).

Is it possible to reset all Sigma II parameters to factory default?

Answer:

Yes, Function 5 resets all parameters to factory defaults. Follow the steps below.

1) Remove the cable from the CN3 connector if present.
2) Apply control power to the Sigma II.
3) Press and release the MODE/SET button on the front of the amplifier.
4) Observe that "Fn000" is displayed. If it is not, repeatedly press the MODE/SET button until displayed.
5) Press the UP arrow key until the amplifier displays "Fn005."
6) Press and HOLD the DATA button until the display reads "PInIt."
7) Press and HOLD the MODE/SET button until "PInIt" flashes.
8) Release the button, notice that the amplifier flashes "donE."
9) The amplifier will again display "PInIt."

The parameters are now restored to default, at this point it is important to cycle control power to insure all parameters take affect.

Is it possible to register and use MotionWorks IEC through a remote desktop?

Answer:

It is possible to use MotionWorks IEC through remote desktop once it has been successfully registered and licensing has been verified.

Limitation:
MotionWorks IEC cannot be registered or run using the Windows communication accessory "Remote Desktop Connection".

When logged into a computer via Remote Desktop, Windows treats the session as a "networked" user. Licensing restrictions prevent license verification for networked users.

When attempting to register or start MotionWorks IEC via Remote Desktop, the "Program not authorized" message will be displayed:

Remedy:
If MotionWorks IEC is already running, it can be controlled using Remote Desktop Connection. Some users prefer Remote Desktop over other means to remotely control the Windows PC due to higher performance.

One way to start MotionWorks IEC is to use an alternate remote control application, such as Real VNC from www.realvnc.com, to start MotionWorks IEC. Once it is started, disconnect from the alternate remote control application and then start Remote Desktop using the same user login credentials.

MotionWorks IEC is also available with a USB key license. With a USB key license MotionWorks IEC can be installed on multiple Windows PCs and will run successfully when the USB key is connected.

Is it possible to prevent the momentum of a linear motion system from carrying the table (or carriage) past a limit switch?

Answer:

The Sigma II amplifier is very robust and protects the motor from harming itself. The Sigma II has overtravel functions built-in to the amplifier, but it is important to understand the settings to use the overtravel feature.

The Sigma II offers three options which are set in Pn001.1:

1 & 2) Pn001.1=0, will stop the travel the same way a servo OFF or alarm stop mode (Pn001.0) is handled. This may be a coast or a Dynamic Brake.

3)Pn001.1=1, will stop the travel by using the Emergency Stop Torque (Pn406) to stop the motor.

The Dynamic Brake and the Emergency Stop Torque are the fastest ways to stop the motor. The "dog" or pickup for the overtravel switches, especially on fast moving machines, should be sufficiently long enough so as not to over shoot the switch and end up in a dead zone. If an overtravel occurs (input goes low) the drive will automatically begin to stop the motor. If the momentum moves the table beyond the switch while stopping, the overtravel will be reset and the motor will try to continue to the move. This may cause damage to the system mechanics.

An overtravel can be latched in the controller through programming. When programming a controller like the MP940, caution must be taken to set up the overtravel detection handling within the supervisory program. The program needs to prevent any movement in the direction of the overtravel, but must also allow the operator to jog back off the switch in the opposite direction.

Is it possible to pause motion once started and resume to the same target later?

Answer:

Yes. The speed [SP] command can be set to zero, which will cause deceleration to zero speed. Technically, the controller considers the axis in motion, because it has been commanded to move and has not reached the final target. Later, when it is OK to resume, the speed [SP] command can be set to its previous value, and the axis will accelerate up to speed and complete the original move.

Note: If you abort motion with either the AB input or AB1 command, it is not possible to resume motion. This is not considered a pause. You would need to store the original target position, and issuse a second move equal the absolute target-current commanded position.

Yes, SixNet Modems have been tested and allow monitoring and program editing/downloading to an MP920/MP930/MP940 over a phone line. The following methods are possible:

Method 1: Remote PC running MW or MW+ --> Modem --> Phone Line --> Modem --> On Site PC running MW or MW+ --> MP940
In this case, any modem will work. PC operating system must be Win95 or Win98

Is it possible to isolate or split the encoder output signal from an SGDH PG output?

Answer:

Yes, the best way to split the encoder output signal from an SGDH amplifier (i.e. connecting the PG output to multiple receivers) is to use a differential signal splitter. BEI Technologies sells an Optically Isolated Encoder Driver Module (three channels Differential) which does the following:

1. Provides optical isolation of three complimentary signals (A & /A, B & /B, Z & /Z)
2. Allows PG connections up to 500 ft. in length
3. Allows encoder splitting to up to 8 receivers

Is it possible to decode the S-Channel information from an Yaskawa absoute encoder into a usable format?

Yes - This absolute encoder feedback data is in a specific ASCII string protocol that is easy to decode and utilize, and can be extracted from the 1CN connector of the Yaskawa Servopack Amplifier.

The attached file below shows wiring details, data format and timing, and sample software code (basic) which can be executed on a PC. The sample code will manipulate the data output from the amplifier into the ASCII string presented in the Sigma II user manual (section 5.7.5). The code below applies to a 12 or 15 bit encoder (code works for both Sigma I and Sigma II amps) . For further reference about absolute encoders in general, please refer to the attached file and Sigma II user manual (section 5.7.5).
