Is it possible to route the POT and NOT signals through DeviceNet on an MP940D? Posted Date: 09/05/2001 Answer: Technically Yes, but care must be taken to insure safety. Positive Over Travel (POT) and Negative Over Travel (NOT) are considered critical I/O, and their function is controlled within the SGDH amplifier by default. This strict control insures that motion will stop given an OT situation. Caution should be used when trying to control such an event over a network, particularly if the network is disconnected (in this case, the controller must immediately stop motion if network heartbeat is lost). These inputs which are wired into the SGDH, are then mapped into the MP940 controller (every 125microsec) to be used for further decision making in the MotionWorks or MotionWorks+ program. All 7 isolated inputs into the SGDH 1CN connector can be read from IWC025 bits 0,1,2,3,4,5, and 6 (or "Sigma_*" inputs from MW+). To view any of these through DeviceNet, simply map the inputs to a DeviceNet output, then each DeviceNet scan will have updated info for other nodes (this is Polled I/O). Is it possible to reset all Sigma II parameters to factory default? Posted Date: 07/13/2004 Answer: Yes, Function 5 resets all parameters to factory defaults. Follow the steps below. 1) Remove the cable from the CN3 connector if present. 2) Apply control power to the Sigma II. 3) Press and release the MODE/SET button on the front of the amplifier. 4) Observe that "Fn000" is displayed. If it is not, repeatedly press the MODE/SET button until displayed. 5) Press the UP arrow key until the amplifier displays "Fn005." 6) Press and HOLD the DATA button until the display reads "PInIt." 7) Press and HOLD the MODE/SET button until "PInIt" flashes. 8) Release the button, notice that the amplifier flashes "donE." 9) The amplifier will again display "PInIt." The parameters are now restored to default, at this point it is important to cycle control power to insure all parameters take affect. Is it possible to prevent the momentum of a linear motion system from carrying the table (or carriage) past a limit switch? Posted Date: 05/21/2001 Answer: The Sigma II amplifier is very robust and protects the motor from harming itself. The Sigma II has overtravel functions built-in to the amplifier, but it is important to understand the settings to use the overtravel feature. The Sigma II offers three options which are set in Pn001.1: 1 & 2) Pn001.1=0, will stop the travel the same way a servo OFF or alarm stop mode (Pn001.0) is handled. This may be a coast or a Dynamic Brake. 3)Pn001.1=1, will stop the travel by using the Emergency Stop Torque (Pn406) to stop the motor. The Dynamic Brake and the Emergency Stop Torque are the fastest ways to stop the motor. The "dog" or pickup for the overtravel switches, especially on fast moving machines, should be sufficiently long enough so as not to over shoot the switch and end up in a dead zone. If an overtravel occurs (input goes low) the drive will automatically begin to stop the motor. If the momentum moves the table beyond the switch while stopping, the overtravel will be reset and the motor will try to continue to the move. This may cause damage to the system mechanics. An overtravel can be latched in the controller through programming. When programming a controller like the MP940, caution must be taken to set up the overtravel detection handling within the supervisory program. The program needs to prevent any movement in the direction of the overtravel, but must also allow the operator to jog back off the switch in the opposite direction. Is it possible to isolate or split the encoder output signal from an SGDH PG output? Posted Date: 07/13/2004 Answer: Yes, the best way to split the encoder output signal from an SGDH amplifier (i.e. connecting the PG output to multiple receivers) is to use a differential signal splitter. Is it possible to decode the S-Channel information from an Yaskawa absoute encoder into a usable format? Posted Date: 04/30/2003 Answer: Yes - This absolute encoder feedback data is in a specific ASCII string protocol that is easy to decode and utilize, and can be extracted from the 1CN connector of the Yaskawa Servopack Amplifier. The attached file below shows wiring details, data format and timing, and sample software code (basic) which can be executed on a PC. The sample code will manipulate the data output from the amplifier into the ASCII string presented in the Sigma II user manual (section 5.7.5). Is it possible for an AC induction motor, driven by a Yaskawa V7 inverter to "follow" a Yaskawa Sigma II servo system using the Servopack's (SGDH) encoder output and the Inverter's "reference pulse" (RP) input? Posted Date: 04/11/2006 Answer: Yes it is. The V7 has a "reference pulse" (RP) input that accepts a pulse frequency as a speed command, and drives the AC induction motor at a proportional speed (reference frequency.) The speed at which the AC motor follows the servo system depends on digital settings in both products. An excel workbook is provided to test both Servopack and Inverter settings before they are actually applied in the two products. Servopack and Inverter Settings: Since the Servo system is commanding pulses to the inverter, the servomotor speed and the value set in the encoder dividing parameter of the Servopack (Pn201) directly effects AC induction motor speed. In order for the inverter to accept the pulse command from the Servopack, the RP input for the inverter must be active (n004 = 5). Inverter parameter n149 scales the "command frequency" to "reference frequency". The other limiting factors in the inverter are the minimum frequency the inverter commands and maximum frequency settings. The minimum frequency reference of this inverter is 1.5Hz. The maximum frequency is the set value in n011, and is commonly set at 60Hz. It must also be noted that only one of the two channels of the Servopack's encoder outputs are used to command the inverter. The dynamic speed range of the AC induction motor (1.5 ~ 60Hz) driven by the inverter is the limiting factor in this system. However, it is also true that the settings in both the Servopack and the Inverter affect the final speed of the AC induction motor. Due to this dependence of the settings in both products, along with the common requirement to obtain reasonable dynamic range of the AC induction motor, an Excel workbook ("Servopack Master V7 slave.xls") is made available. Using the workbook: The workbook has two spreadsheets. One includes the instructions, the other (Servo-Inverter tool) will predict the resultant reference frequency speed of the inverter driven AC induction motor. The user needs to provide the "Servo-Inverter tool" spreadsheet with the digital settings of both devices, and the speed of the servo system. This spreadsheet has yellow colored cells where the servo system speed and the parameter setting of each device are entered. The results, displayed in bold blue characters, include the frequency command of the Servopack's pulse output and the frequency reference generated by the inverter to the AC induction motor. In a vertical axis application, the motor trips the overtravel switch and coasts to the hard stop. What might be the cause? Posted Date: 07/23/2001 Answer: The SGDH servopack has the ability to control the stop mode when an overtravel is tripped (if overtravel switches are wired into the SGDH as recommended). The default method of stopping is to disable the motor and allow the dynamic brake to stop the motor. This method works very well in most horizontal applications, but vertical applications require a different method. When using an MP940, the SGDH overtravel function will disable the motor, even if the MP940 did not execute the disable servomotor block. In this mode, the motor will then continue to coast, and the MP940 is not able to apply torque to stop the motor (because it is not enabled). In this example, it is better to change the overtravel method to keep the motor enabled when an overtravel is tripped. This can be done by setting the overtravel stop mode Pn001.1 to 1 (default is 0). This change allows the MP940 to bring the motor to a controlled stop. How long will a Sigma II absolute encoder remember its absolute position data without a battery attached? Posted Date: 07/13/2004 Answer: If the battery voltage drops below the minimum voltage of 2.7V, an A.83 alarm will occur on the SGDH amplifier to signal that battery replacement is necessary. The battery should be replaced as soon as possible. If the battery is removed (or the encoder cable is disconnected) while control power to the SGDH amplifier is off, the absolute encoder will lose its position data within 2 to 3 seconds. To prevent the encoder from losing its data, make sure you replace the battery while the SGDH amplier control power is on. After the battery has been replaced, the power to the amplifier should be cycled. How do I add external regenerative resistors? Posted Date: 12/14/2007 Answer: First, it is important to add a regenerative resistor with the proper resistance. Otherwise, damage to the ServoPack and/or poor performance may result. Please refer to the table in Section 5.6 of the Sigma II User's Manual [YEA-SIA-S800-32.2] for the minimum allowable resistance for each ServoPack model (see attachment below also). The user's manual also discusses calculating regenerative energy capacity. Once the amount of regenerative capacity has been determined, a resistor must be acquired to satisfy the requirements. Yaskawa offers a range of resistor pack units, and while they are designed and wired to work with particular sized ServoPacks, they can be rewired/reconfigured to work most any unit. Please reference the attached document for configuration and wiring details. Once a resistor has been acquired, it is connected between terminals B1 and B2 of the SGDH ServoPack. Be sure to remove the jumper between B2 and B3 (applicable to ServoPacks between 500W to 5.0kW). Now the external regenerative resistor's useable capacity must be calculated. There are two general variations to this: 1) Natural Convection Cooling. About 20% of convection cooled resistor's capacity may be used. For example, if a resistor has a nameplate value of 1000 watts, the maximum usable capacity is 1000Watts * 20% = 200 Watts (assuming natural convection cooling). This limitation is generally specified by the resistor manufacturer to insure high MTBF, so be sure to verify the capacity reduction in your specific operating environment. 2) Forced Air Cooling. About 50% of a forced air cooled resistors capacity may be used. For example, if a resistor has a nameplate value of 1000 watts, the maximum usable capacity is 1000Watts * 50% = 500 Watts (assuming forced air cooling). Lastly, the value for Parameter PN-600 (Regenerative Resistor Capacity) must be calculated and input. PN-600 is in units of 10W, so the above calculated valued must be divided by 10 and the result is input for PN-600. How are Yaskawa Servopacks (or Inverters) connected to a five wire 400VAC power source? Posted Date: 03/12/2002 Answer: Germany (and other European Countries) uses a five wire three phase 400VAC. Three wires are power, one is neutral, and one is ground. The 5 wire system is used to get balanced 400 V phase to phase and 230V phase to neutral (400/1.732) so control voltage can be obtained without a control transformer. In this case, the feeder transformer is a wye configuration, while the 5th wire is the power system ground. Some plants ground the neutral, while others float it. In the case of Yaskawa inverters and servos: For normal use, we ignore the neutral and utilize the 3 power phases and earth ground (system ground). For CE, Yaskawa's smaller inverters (V7, J7, and small servos) require the main AC power supply to be wye configuration with the neutral grounded in order to limit voltage to 277V or less to ground. This is to meet voltage clearance (LVD) requirements for CE. How are the Electronic Gear Ratio parameters, Pn202 and Pn203, set for linear motors? Posted Date: 07/25/2005 Answer: The positioning resolution of the linear motor when used with the Sigma II SGDH servo amplifier in position mode is equal to the linear encoder scale pitch divided by 256. For a 20 micron pitch linear encoder (i.e. Renishaw RGH22B), the positioning resolution is 20 micron/256. The incoming position reference is scaled by the Electronic Gear Ratio. Pn202 is the Electronic Gear Ratio numerator, set to a default of 4. Pn203 is the Electronic Gear Ratio denominator, set to a default of "1". Therefore, with these these default settings, for every reference input pulse, the linear motor will move (4/1) x (20 microns/256) or 0.3125 microns, assuming a 20 micron pitch linear encoder. The Electronic Gear Ratio can be changed to allow for "friendlier" positioning units. For example, assuming a 20 micron pitch linear encoder: 1.) The desired position reference resolution is one micron (or 0.001mm). For every reference pulse, the linear motor moves one micron. To achieve this resolution, set Pn202=256 and Pn203=20. Now, for every reference pulse, the linear motor will move (256/20) x (20 microns/256) or one micron. 2.) The desired position reference resolution is 0.001 inch. Set Pn202=8128 and Pn203=25. Do Sigma II motors comply with standard NEMA flanges for mounting? Posted Date: 07/25/2005 Answer: The SGMAH series of Sigma II servo motors include three models (200W, 400W & 800W) with standard NEMA flanges. For smaller motors in this series, (30W, 50W & 100W) a NEMA flange adapter (Yaskawa # SGM-N23) is available to provide standard NEMA mounting. Shaft diameters of standard Sigma motors differ from the NEMA standard. When selecting a NEMA model, the shaft size changes to SAE sizing. For the 200W and 400W motors, the shaft diameter is .50" (12.7mm), and for the 800W motor, the shaft diameter is .625" (15.875mm). The following are Yaskawa NEMA part numbers for reference. Does Yaskawa sell the SGDM Sigma II amplifier in North America? Posted Date: 07/13/2004 Answer: The SGDM amplifier is a non-expandable Sigma II amplifier. It is sold only in Asia. However, the SGDH Sigma II amplifier is identical, except that the SGDH amplifier has a port on the side of the amplifier to interface with option cards such as the NS600 or MP940. If an imported machine (likely built in Asia) has an SGDM and needs a replacement amplifier, the SGDH can be used. It has exactly the same parameter set, runs exactly the same motors, and has exactly the same footprint. An expansion port protrudes 8mm from the side of the SGDH, but this is not a problem if the amplifiers were properly spaced (min. 10mm between amplifiers) in the cabinet. The part number for the SGDM amplifier follows this convention: SGDM-WWXYZ, where WW is the amplifier power rating (i.e. '04' for 400W or '55' for 5.5 kW), X is a letter determining input voltage (A= 200VAC, B=100VAC, D=400VAC), Y is the control code (usually 'D'), and Z is an optional revision level (usually either blank or 'A'). The replacement motor will be SGDH-wwxE, where ww is the same amplifier power rating and x is the same input voltage letter as the SGDM. For example, an SGDM-02BD would cross-reference to a SGDH-02BE and an SGDM-50ADA would cross to a SGDH-50AE. Does Yaskawa offer Sigma II power and encoder cables rated for continuous flex? Posted Date: 06/24/2013 Answer: Yes. Many applications require cables that are more flexible than a standard cable. As a result, Yaskawa has introduced continuous flex rated cables for Sigma II motors up to 11kW (see attached document for complete cable specification summary for Sigma II). SGMAH and SGMPH motors feature continuous flex rated power and encoder cable assemblies as standard. For the larger SGMGH, SGMSH, and SGMUH motors typically installed in a static environment where physical movement of the motor is less likely, the standard cable remains a non-flex rated cable. Continuous flex rated cables are available for both power and encoder simply by specifying the 'CE' version of the cable [e.g., B1CE-03(A) instead of B1E-03(A)]. Continuous flex rated cable is manufactured to meet varying needs and requires proper application and installation to achieve the desired results. Testing methods vary by manufacturer, however, two key parameters are routinely published by cable manufacturers which can be used to calculate cable life (# of cycles) based on a design target of 10,000,000 cycles. They are: * Cable outside diameter (OD) * Minimum bending radius as a function of cable outside diameter (e.g., 10 X OD) If the minimum bend radius is too large, or a larger bend radius is acceptable, the effect on approximate cable life can be calculated as a function of the 10,000,000 cycle design target. The relationship between cable longevity and bending radius is non-linear. When calculating life cycle, the term "approximate maximum" is best suited to describe the resulting calculation. Use the following as a guideline for such calculations. 1) (Cable radius / Radius of Bend) x 100 = xx%. If xx% is less than 2%, the 10,000,000 cycle mark is approached. 2) Take the calculated xx% and calculate this ratio relative to the 2% design target. (2%) / (xx%) = Ratio of chosen bend radius relative to design target. 3) Multiply this ratio by 10,000,000 to calculate the approximate maximum number of cycles. Here is one example. Cable OD = 50mm. Minimum bending radius is 10 X OD. This means the minimum bend radius is 500 mm. This may be too large. Assume bend radius of only 400mm is possible. Thus, (25 mm / 400 mm) x 100% = 6.25%. (2%) / (6.25%) = 0.32 x 10,000,000 = 3,200,000 approximate cycles. Can the Sigma II SGDH Servopack provide analog monitors on the 1CN connector like the Sigma I SGDB Servopack? Posted Date: 07/13/2004 Answer: Yes. The SGDH-xx includes analog monitors on the CN1 connector. They are the same electrical points as the pins on the CN5 connector. The analog monitor #1 is on Pin 16 of CN1. It is factory set by "Pn003.0 =2" for 1V/100% of rated torque. The analog monitor #2 is on Pin 17 of CN1. It is factory set by "Pn003.1 =0" for 1V/1000rpm of motor speed. Can the Sigma II absolute encoder data be preserved when the encoder cable is removed? Posted Date: 02/11/2005 Answer: It is possible to back-up absolute encoder data by using a battery backup cable. The Sigma II absolute encoder does not have a high-storage capacitor like the Sigma I, so multi-turn position data will be lost within a few seconds once the encoder cable is disconnected. Normally, the encoder cable is not disconnected, and the data will be retained by the backup battery installed in the amplifier. In some cases, however, it may be necessary to disconnect the encoder cable. But the system must be able to backup the data in the absolute encoder. In these cases, it is recommended to use a battery backup cable. This battery backup cable is connected between the motor and the encoder cable. It has a battery built-in to the cable, so the encoder cable is no longer needed to bring the battery power from the amplifier. The attached document contains more information on how to construct such a cable. Can the MP920 change the parameters in an SGDH amplifier? Posted Date: 08/19/2004 Answer: Yes, an MP920 with an SVB Module can read/write SGDH parameters via the register OLxx35. Depending on the motion command code, the OLxx35 register can hold three different types of data: 1. When Motion Command Code (OWxx20) is set to 17 (read servo parameter) or 18 (change servo parameter), OLxx35 contains the servo drive parameter number. Bits 0-11 are the Pn number and bits 12-15 are the number of words. When reading, the value of the servo parameter is stored in Pn Constant Read Data register ILxx28. When writing, the value stored in Pn Constant Change Data register, OWxx36, is written to the amplifier. 2. When Motion Command Code (OWxx20) is set to 19, OLxx35 contains the current servo drive alarm monitor number. The Alarm code is found in the Servo Drive Alarm Code Register, IWxx24. 3. When Motion Command Code (OWxx20) is set to 20, OLxx35 contains the current servo drive alarm history monitor number. When specifying a number between 0-9, the alarm code corresponding to the specified monitor number is stored in the Servo Drive Alarm Code Register, IWxx24. Example for reading Torque Reference Filter Time Constant, Pn401: 1. Set OWxx35 to H1401. The first three nibbles have the parameter number 401 and the last nibble specifies the number of words, in this case 1 (0~65535) 2. Change OWxx20 to 17. This will read the value of Pn401 and store it in the Pn Constant Read Data register, ILxx28. Example for writing Torque Reference Filter Time Constant, Pn401: 1. Set OWxx35 to H1401. Can the linear encoder be mounted "backwards" (positive direction of linear encoder opposite to positive direction of linear motor)? Posted Date: 04/28/2003 Answer: Yes, the linear encoder can be mounted "backwards" relative to the linear motor, it is good design practice to insure that the motor and encoder have the same positive direction reference. Normally, the linear motor and encoder would be oriented such that the positive direction of each is in the same direction. The positive direction of the linear motor is in the direction in which the motor cables/connectors protrude. Generally, this holds true for the linear encoder as well (as it does for Renishaw and Heidenhain). Please consult the linear encoder manufacturer in regards to positive orientation. If the linear encoder is mounted "backwards" relative to the linear motor, one of the following MUST be done in order for the linear motor system to function properly. 1. Rewire the linear encoder cable. Swap the "A" signal wires with the corresponding "B" signal wires. 2. The following is only applicable for Sigma II SGDH type servo amplifiers with the Y213 modification (Y213 modification is for use with linear motors only). Set user parameter Pn080.1=1 (B-phase progression). This will allow for proper commutation of the linear motor. However, the positive direction of the motor will now be in the direction opposite in which the motor cables/connectors protrude. To change the motor direction, set Pn000.0=1. 3. The following is only applicable for Legend SGDG type servo amplifiers. Set SW1 function selection switch no.4 (Linear Scale Polarity Reversal) to OFF (B-phase progression). This will allow for proper commutation of the linear motor. However, the positive direction of the motor will now be in the direction opposite in which the motor cables/connectors protrude. To change the motor direction, set SW1 function selection switch no.6 (Feedback Pulse B-phase Reversal) to OFF. Can a smooth shaft Yaskawa motor be replaced with one that has keyway shaft? Posted Date: 01/04/2002 Answer: In most cases, yes. Motors with keyway shafts can be run with the key fitted, or without the key. The couplings that are used with smooth shaft motors are typically compression fitted. These couplings also fit well on motor shafts with keyway. If the user wishes to fill the keyway space, a half key may be installed in the shaft keyway. Can a servomotor be energized while it is moving? Posted Date: 07/31/2001 Answer: The SGDH amplifier will not energize a servomotor that is moving. Because of this, it is important to have proper brake timing, especially on vertical applications. The SGDH has a built-in holding brake interlock (/BK output) that is the safest and most reliable way to make sure that the holding brake is applied correctly. Example Situation: A customer wishes to use a simple digital output from a PLC to control his brake output (instead of the Yaskawa-recommended /BK output). The customer programs his PLC to remove the brake at the same time as he energizes his servo. If the brake releases before the motor is energized, gravity will cause the motor to coast downward. The SGDH will begin its attempt to energize the motor (digital display says "run"), but the amplifier will not allow the motor to be energized because it is moving. When the motor stops either by a hard stop or by external force, the SGDH will energize the motor. The motor will now be able to move as the controller commands. The solution to this situation is to hold the brake on longer to give the motor a chance to apply power. If the /BK output is used, the timing functions are all built-in to the SGDH. For more information on using the Holding Brake Interlock with the SGDH amplifier, consult the SGDH User's Manual (YEA-SIA-S800-32.2) section 5.4.4. Are there any special considerations when using an absolute encoder? Posted Date: 06/05/2002 Answer: In most situations, the absolute encoder will work with no parameter changes necessary. However, in some circumstances (when the application has a gear reduction and moves in one direction only), it may be necessary to change Pn205, the Multi-Turn Limit Setting. If Pn205 is not set correctly, the application may seem to change it's position at power-up. This is due to the "rollover" of the multi-turn counter on the absolute encoder. Please read the attached document for more information and instructions on setting Pn205. Note: This applies to all products using an absolute encoder motor. Hence, this also applies when using Application Modules such as: NS600, NS300, NS500, MP940. Are motor power and encoder cables for Sigma II interchangable with the cables for Sigma I? Posted Date: 07/13/2004 Answer: The motor power cable assemblies are interchangeable in only two cases: 1) Between SGMG & SGMGH series motors 2) Between SGMS & SGMSH series motors. The connectors on the SGM and SGMAH look similar, but they are not the same. The SGMP series motor uses a MS style connector, however, the MS part number (size) is unique and not used elsewhere. The SGMPH series motor uses Interconnectron connectors which are not compatible with any other YEA offering. The encoder cables are NEVER interchangable between the Sigma I and Sigma II series. Bottom Line: When upgrading to SGMGH or SGMSH motors from their Sigma I counterparts, hang on to the old power cables...they make great spares!
